Its so difficult to accept what happened to this young innocent boy for no season his mother Just singled him out and treated him so badly compared to his two other brothers who she treated so well. This book is one that you will read over and over and never forget. “One Child’s Courage To Survive” is the quote written on the front of the book and sums up this book extremely well. The story begins Dave being rescued by some of his elementary school teachers who have gradually been noticing his cuts and bruises.
He then retells his story that led him Into this situation. This book is very factual and honest In the way It Is written and In some parts Is very harrowing. In Davit’s time with his mother he was mentally and physically tortured. He had to survive being forced to drink ammonia, having excrement rubbed in his face and having his arm held over a gas ring. Dive’s life was dependent on his mothers mental state each day and the amount of alcohol she had consumed.
As you read the book Dave tells you of how he realizes that the longer he could bide his mothers time from her awful games the more likely he was to live. From the moment I started reading this book I entered Davit’s world and felt very psychologically involved. You realize that you really do not know what goes on behind closed doors and you really can not prejudge a situation from the sidelines. I felt that I had a real Insight Into an abused Child’s life even though I could never Imagine what It would be Like It gave me a snippet of the situation.
At times this book was difficult to read as the things his mother did to him were so Insane and unreal It really made e realize how much human strength and determination it took David to get through this terrible ordeal, but also how proud and pleased he would have been with himself to of managed to survive to bide those small bits of time that made all the difference and in the end saved his life. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book although at times it is difficult to read it gives you a real physical and emotional insight into such troubled lives and makes you realize how lucky we really are.
