Another herb we researched was organo. Organo is a herb that is an antibacterial agent from the lamiaceae family,or the mint family, which originated from Greece.
This herb grows to be about 20-80 cm tall and the leaves are about 1-4 cm tall. The best weather to grow these herbs are in the mediterranean climate. Oregano is also used in cooking to give it a little flavor while still being healthy. Some of its benefits are that it can treat headaches, relieve muscles, help cure gastrointestinal disorders, and help menstrual cramps. Some other benefits this herb does is it treats respiratory tract disorders, many skin conditions. Also, the older an oregano herb gets, the more benefits it has to your body. In pizza and is one of the herbs that the Italian cuisine uses a lot in their food to give the flavor.
In a medical source, WebMD, it had stated that,”A single study found that taking 200 milligrams of oregano oil three times a day for six weeks eliminated three such parasites”(“WebMd”). This shows that if you take 200 mL of oregano oil and it killed off 3 parasites which means that if you take more and more it will literally kill off all the bad organisms in your body, so who knows of this this is the next cure for cancer. The other quote that I found in the same source stated,”Some laboratory studies show that oregano or its compounds have properties that can kill some food-borne germs. But there is no evidence that it helps prevent food poisoning”(“WebMd”). This quote shows that oregano can kill of many germs and bacteria that is bad for you but you don’t know if it will cure food poisoning and other diseases that are affecting us today. Oregano can also be harmful to the body, for example, it can cause stomach upsets and some may develop allergic reactions to the herb. This herb relates back to Bless Me Ultima, like in the quote, “We wandered on and found some oregano, and we gathered plenty because this was not only a cure for coughs and fever but a spice my mother used for beans and meant.”(Anaya 40).
This quote shows that Ultima used this special herb to cure cold and coughs and even for flavor for food that and it’s true because all the uses of the herb is used today for the same uses. Other curanderas do still use it like how Ultima used it, they say, “Simple spices, herbs, fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, papaya, onions, potatoes, garlic, cilantro, chocolate, rosemary, mint, cumin, oregano, cinnamon and chamomile, are all believed to have medicinal properties and are part of a nutritious diet (Torres and Sawyer, 2005).
