Charles Darwin, a man who extended the theory of evolution. He was born on February 12, 1809 and died on April 19, 1882. Charles was born in a small town in England, to a family full of scientists. Darwin was very smart and entered college at the age of 16. He enrolled at Edinburgh University. After two years of study at Edinburgh he became a student at a small college in Cambridge. At Cambridge, Darwin became very interested in Natural history. Darwin graduated from Cambridge in 1828 with a bachelor’s degree in Arts. As time went on, Darwin sparked an interest in biology and geology. One might ask what is evolution? According to Ker Than (2015), evolution is a “process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioral traits. Changes that allow an organism to better adapt to its environment will help it survive and have more offspring.” In a shorter definition, a species that changes over time to adapt to their surroundings. Darwin’s theory of evolution has two main points. Brian Richmond, director of human origins, “All life on earth is connected and related to each other, and this diversity of life is a product of modifications of population by natural selection where some traits were favored in an environment over others.” In a simpler way, this theory can be used as “descent with modification” as said by Briana Pobiner, “The theory is sometimes described as survival of the fittest. Here “fitness” refers not to an organism’s strength or athletic ability, but rather the ability to survive and reproduce.” Charles darwin liked to use the phrase survival of the fittest. meaning the ones who are fit for the environment at the time will survive. People often mistake the fittest ones to be the strongest and biggest. Fittest does not always mean the strongest will survive. The theory that Darwin extended, was based on the thought that all “species” are related and that their inherited traits change over time. Charles Darwin wrote a book called “The Origin Of Species”, it was published in 1859. Darwin pointed out how evolution can cause a land animal to turn into a whale. He used that supposedly as an example. Darwin noticed how a black bear swam with its mouth open to catch insects and fish. When he released that idea to the public, it did not work out very well. Darwin felt so embarrassed that he removed it from the later editions of the book. What is evolution? Evolution can change a species in certain ways that can cause a group to change color and or size over several generations. This is called “microevolution”. Microevolution is the explanation of the existence of plants, mammals, and other living things. According to macroevolution, it can turn dinosaurs into birds and ancestors of apes into humans. An example of macroevolution according to Yourdictionary would be “An attempt by Russian scientist Karpechenko to cross a radish with a cabbage resulted initially in the creation of hybrid plant that was sterile. However, the seeds of those plants became fertile with the parent species, creating a new plant called Raphanobrassica.” The physical changes that are visible to the eye and the internal changes as well, whether it be in humans or in animals, are called mutations. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine mutations are a “permanent alteration in the DNA sequence that make up a gene. Mutations range in size: and they can affect anywhere from a single DNA building block to a large segment of a chromosome that includes multiple genes.” Mutations can either be harmful, or neutral, and in some cases they can be beneficial to some organisms. If it is beneficial, then it will pass on to future generations of the species. Evolution is not the only way for organisms to evolve. Genes can be transferred from one species to another when they migrate. There is evidence that evolution happened and a lot of evidence that it did not. Some of the evidence for evolution are fossils. Paleontologists find new fossils and new evidence for evolution every day. With the evidence that they have found, scientists know the difference between male and female, they know how quickly or slowly children grew up. Scientists use the fossils that are found to study the differences in the body and the brain to understand the evolution process more clearly. Another type of evidence scientists use to prove that evolution did happen is genetics. DNA is the key to all life, thus scientists believe that humans came from one common ancestor. Scientists assume just because humans and apes are so similar in structure that we evolved from apes. So, how long does evolution take?  According to an article titled “Not so fast” found on, evolution is very slow and it takes about one million years for evolution to fully complete. Why is evolution considered “science” when no one was there to witness it? To scientists, the only way to hypothesise evolution, is through fossils and genetics. Keep in mind that this is only a theory. What kind of other theories are there? For example, the big bang theory, is a theory that the universe came to be in one blink of an eye. Another theory which many people believe, is creationism. Creationism is the belief that the universe and all forms of life were created by God. The Bible explains how the earth and all the living things inside of it came to be in the first few chapter of the Bible called Genesis. It is called the six days of creation. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) It goes on to say that in the first day of creation God said “Let there be light” and there was light. God separated the light from the dark and called it day and night. The morning and evening were created on the first day. The second day of creation, God created the sky and the ocean. On the third day, God created the sun, the moon, and the stars. The fourth day, He created the land, plants, and trees. He created the plants to produce vegetation, and the trees to bear many different kinds of fruits. On the fifth day, God created man, and animals. He put man in charge of everything. God created mankind in his own image. When he created man, he created a woman out of a rib of the man to help him with his responsibilities. In Genesis 2:23 the Bible says “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman for she was taken out of a man.” God created everything in a week, when scientists tell us that “evolution” takes thousands of years.
