             Tool
used for the present study is Mental Well
Being Scale for higher secondary school students. Mental Well Being scale consists of 20 items. The response categories are given as , not
at all, sometimes, neutral, often, always. A numerical weightage of 1-5 is
given to responses respectively. Each statement of the scale has been given
response alternatives that is, not all (1), sometimes (2), neutral (3), often
(4), and always (5). The scale should get a minimum of 20 points and maximum of
100 points.

Description
of the Tool used

              For
the present study investigators collected data from various higher secondary
schools of wayanad districts of Kerala state. Sample consists of 328 higher
secondary school students.

OBJECTIVES

                   
The present study is an attempt to study the mental well being of higher
secondary school students of kerala. The major objectives and results of the
study are given under relevant headings.

 

                      Mental health is the
degree of adjustment of individuals to themselves and the world at large with
maximum effectiveness, satisfaction, cheerfulness and socially considerable
behaviour, using their abilities for facing and accepting the realities of life
to the maximum possible (Sivarajan,2011). Mental health of an individual is
depends on the environment where he live. Different types of stress will
negatively affect the mental health and mental well being of the individual.
Adolescence period is considered as the period of stress and strain, storm and
strife. Adolescence experiences create conflicts between him and society. It is
a period of emotional instability and intensity. Adolescence are not consistent
in their emotional expressions. Sometimes they appear to be moody enthusiastic
and sometimes moody. This type of psychological problem will affect the mental
health and mental well being of adolescence. 

 

                         The World Health Organization defines
mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual
realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life,
can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to
his or her community” (WHO 2005). Quite simply, mental health
refers to a person?s health of the mind (Barbara 2008). Therefore the
impact of social, cultural, physical environment and education can all
affect someone’s mental health (Kitchener & Jorm2002).

                Mental health is a process of continuous
and appropriate adjustment to the environment by the individual. The individual
who perceives and accept reality can be considered to be mentally healthy. A
mentally healthy man will have an even temper and a functional intelligence. He
will be leading a life happy, full harmonious and effective. In this present
study investigator studied the mental wellbeing of higher secondary school
students of Kerala. Mental wellbeing scale was used for the data collection.
Data collected from 328 higher secondary school students of kerala state. Results
of the study showed that mental well being of the higher secondary students of
kerala is satisfactory to certain extent.
