Erik MercadoMarket Revolution The Market revolution that happened in the United States was between 1793 and 1909. This was a dramatic change in the way Americans did manual-labor. The Market Revolution brought in a lot of money in to United States and changed where and how all the people worked around the country. The Market Revolution caused many changes to the country that caused an influx of new workers in the job market, but the working condition were poor for this workers, and it saw women finally able to work outside of their home. These drastic changes from the Market Revolution originated from the southern United States. Shortly after these practices were then implemented by the northerners and eventually by the rest of the world. Tradition forms of trading goods became a thing of the past when improvements in transportation, communication, and industry occured. During these times there was a drastic increase in domestic manufacturing and increase of trade within the United States.
While on the other hand dependency of foreign goods dramatically declined. With all these changes in labor came with an increase of wage labor, which was the relationship between worker and an employer that had hired them under a formal or informal contract. The increased amount of workers lead to the agricultural rise in the South and West, while the North was also having great success in the textile in industry. This show that the Market Revolution strengthened the economy around the United States. Working conditions for Americans during the Market Revolution were atrocious. Most of the factories were overcrowded and treberly loud. There was no air ventilation to remove toxins in the air.
Employees, which were as young a ten years old would be contracted to work from before the sun would rise until after the sun had set. Which caused most americans to not have domestic lives. Workers were even forced to work eighty hours a week. During the winter when the sun would set early employers demanded they continue to work with oil lanterns that would only produce a dim light, and release great amounts of smoke and fumes into the factory’s air. Factories were extremely dangerous as well. People would work with cotton bales and use oil to lubricate the machines, which made fires a persisting problem. Injuries were a common issue as well. Employees’ hands and fingers were maimed or completely cut off.
Occasionally limbs or bodies were crushed. If an employee didn’t die due to the injury they would lose their job. Corporal punishment was also a result of accidents. These punishments were issued not only to adults but children as well, and in some cases the children would die as a result of injuries that they suffered from the person in charge. In the early nineteenth century, families in the united states were park of the cash economy that was made the market revolution. This was what helped moved work away from the home. These new changed transformed American ways of working which then meant there was a differentiating meaning to the American woman or man. As Americans found more foods in stored and made less at home it made it possible to remove women and children from working from their house.
The market revolution didn’t just change the economy but it also changed what it meant to be what it meant to a be a family. Women and children worked to help supply more money for the men that were getting low wages. Women were first seen as just being able to take take of children and cleaning and cooking. With the Market revolution at full affect this let women stop work from home and get a job out of the factories. Women were still seen as inferior to men. Women that made shoes were only getting paid between two and three dollars for every seventy hours of work. The market revolution helped get the women out of their homes and helped them to prove that they can also do the work as men do at the end of it all women were still seen below in the social status.
All in all the Market revolution caused many changes to the United States which saw the economy rise and stay steady. All the changes to trade, communication, and transportation cause many factories to give out contracts to many types of people, from ten year olds to full grown men. These factories seemed like they were doing the working people a favour by giving them a job but in fact they were just harming them by making them work in such awful conditions.
The Market Revolution also saw the first time women were actually able to get paid for the work they do. Even though the women were still seen as inferior to men. Even though the Market Revolution had a lot of problem it was what help our country become what it is today.
Emancipation Transformed The SouthAt the height of slavery the southerners were looking to make profit and watch as their economy grew. All of this was possible due the free back break labor that was provided by the African American slaves. Most of the country did not condone the owning of slaves and neither did the current president of the United States of America which was Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln soon after pass the emancipation proclamation which saw the owning of slaves to be abolished but this did not have the effect the him or the north expected, and even while the slaves were free their living and working conditions were still immensely poor.
Emancipation alone was not enough for the slaves to get liberated. This caused the North to try to break down the slave fueled economy. The slaves would work in growing cotton and tobacco. Even though the slaves were owned, it was most beneficial for the owner to treat them with a certain standard. After all the slaves were humans they required a place to live, food, and some education, even if it was just how to do their job. Once slave ownership was abolished do partly to the emancipation proclamation, many owners turned former slaves off their land, and refused to give them money for the work they did.
The former owners felt like they didn’t need to pay them for the work they have done. The only way for the ex slaves to get a job was to accept job with even worse working condition than they had when they were slaves. The new jobs only paid a tiny amount of money for the back breaking labor. Even though the emancipation proclamation was trying to get rid of slave ownership, and try to hinder the south’s economy it ultimately failed. The agricultural work was no long free but it was still cheap and the white southerners still made a decent profit.Once the slaves were free they still found life to be extremely difficult. Even though the government made laws like the Black Codes which gave ex slaves some rights like the right to marry, own property but it also made it illegal for african americans to serve on juries, testify against whites, to serve in the military. African Americans also had to deal with hardships because they had no formal education and no job skills other than what they had learned at the tobacco and cotton plantations.
White southerners didn’t want the ex slaves to have more rights than the few they did have so the passed what was no the Jim Crow law which were designed to prevent integration. The south was trying to do what they can to keep the African Americans from getting the rights they deserve. The South was furious that they no longer had the free labor and that their economy was begging to crash. To sum up, the south’s was just looking out for their economy what was dependent on the free slave labor. Even though the north and president lincoln did what they could to try to stop the south from exploiting the free labor by passing the emancipation proclamation, it didn’t have the effect they were looking for and the south still found a way to get the labor needed at cheap prices.
Also even though the slaves were freed they were still living in terrible condition due to the fact they had no education or other job skills. There was also still other factors they had to facer like racism from all the white southerners that thought they were superior. The Inevitable WarThe Civil war was one the United States of America’s most bloody wars. It lasted between 1861 and 1865. There was over five hundred thousand killed soldiers. The Union and Confederates were both fights because they believed that they had the better idea of how the states should run.
One believing slavery was just and the other side believing slavery was inhumane. I strongly believe that the Civil War was Inevitable due to sectionalism, the compromise of 1850, and secession. Sectionalism played an important role in causing the civil war. It caused conflict between the north and the south, which had their own idea of how the economy should run, and they both disagree with the other’s plan. For example the south depended on slavery so their economy would prosper and they needed a lot of slaves to work the torerus labor. On the other hand the north was getting by with a flowing economy without any slaves because they were mostly focusing on manufacturing business that didn’t demand as much physical labor. While both groups didn’t agree with each other they both looked towards the Declaration of Independence for support.
The south argued that all white men were equal, and that African Americans did not deserve the same rights due to the color of their skins. The North disagreed completely with this. The north argued and protested that the declaration of independence included everyone even the African American slaves. The compromise of 1850 was meant to bring everyone together but instead it caused turmoil. This compromise set a border around Texas due to the fact it was expanding quickly into Mexico so the north needed to cut off the land to try to limit the possibility of expanding slavery to new territory. Slave trade was all made illegal in the district of columbia which meant that there be less slaves brought into the union. The compromise also made it possible for New Mexico and Utah to be able to vote on slavery.
This was people because slavery was ambiguous in those states so they were neither a slave or non slave state. Laster the Fugitive Slave Law was put to practice. This law would reward someone ten dollars to the people that would kidnap slaves that have escaped and return them to their masters, and they would have to face a trial without a jury. The compromise was meant to unify the North and the South, but instead it created a bigger division between them. The compromise ended up being a failure, and was one of the reasons the civil war was inevitable. Lastly secession was one of the last factors to play a role in causing the civil war. As Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860 many people did not agree with the ways he wanted to implement his policies. The South was extremely angered because Lincoln wanted to have all the slaves because free people.
The north was also a little disappointed in Abraham Lincoln as well. The North felt was Abraham Lincoln was being too soft on the south as he took away the right to own slaves by passing the Emancipation Proclamation. This was also a factor that played into the start of the Civil War in 1861.To sum up the civil war was inevitable. The south and north had completely different views on slavery. This and the combination of sectionalism, the compromise of 1850, and secession caused the civil war to being.
At the end of the war the Union came out on top even though the south had the better generals and more war experience with them. All in all the correct side won in my opinion. Slavery is inhumane and should not be tolerated anywhere in the world. Everyone should have the freedom and right to do what they like. The color of your skin or race should not stop you from being able to fight for a better life.
