The article entitled Getting a Good Night’s Sleep With the Help of Psychology discussed the significance of the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in reducing the number of patients with sleeping disorders. From the year 2001 to 2003, CBT had proven to be a better type of therapy applied than a placebo treatment or progressive muscle relaxation in curing insomnia (Edinger, 2001) and positive long term effects for the decrease on sleep latency and patients’ satisfaction (Backhaus, 2001; Morin, 2003). Dr. Charles Morin (2003) concluded that the reason why CBT is very much effective is that it reduces the patients’ misconceptions on sleep and addresses more on the behavioral aspect.

Though the article stated that not all the time is the CBT applicable to some patients, it is still considered as the best medical panacea for sleeping disorder (APA Website, 2004). Critique on the Article There are several factors needed to assess over this article. As discussed in the summary above, it informs the readers the benefits of having a cognitive behavioral therapy as the best treatment for sleeping disorder especially on insomnia.

It is an accumulated series of findings done by notable psychologists and researchers on finding the most preferable treatment on the patients without relying too much on the pharmacological approach. The significance of this article is to give precaution to the readers on how grave the sleeping disorder is if not medicated immediately. The consequences of not having the disorder properly treated may help increase the danger for the people regarding their safety and performance; one fine example is the rising ratio of vehicle accidents due to sleeping problems (APA Website, 2004).

The evidences presented in favor of the CBT seems to lack details; granted that the paper should be presented in a simple manner for all readers’ quick comprehension but the descriptions written appeared to be weak. All the ideas were presented in an organized manner but what is mind-boggling is that how come the author of this article seems to forget to explain further about CBT. The author informs right away not only the findings but as well as significance and practical application of the CBT, yet seem to fail in defining what CBT is in psychology.

Another factor worth mentioning is the order of the paragraphs being presented. It would have been better if the author first presented the problem and its significance before tackling the results. This might have confused the readers ever more. Although there was a survey conducted and several studies to support the premise for the CBT, one may notice all the information given are secondary. It would be more appropriate if the author him/herself provided primary sources to make this article more convincing. There may have few technical words that could be understood only by psychology students.

The author, however, used simple words for the description, regarding the reliability of the CBT. The quality and quantity of sources are adequate enough for a paper yet the author failed to describe fully the details. It would be also good if there were graphs presented for readers to compare CBT to other kinds of psychotherapy. What this article lacked is that there was little discussion made over other methods used, to make comparison or contrast on CBT. All the researchers presented in the article gave affirmative or neutral response on the use of this therapy.

It seemed to be as though it does not give the option for the readers to decide on themselves whether CBT is the best cure for the sleeping disorder or not. Web Evaluation (form from the American Library Association website) ? Accuracy- the author of the article was not named nor recognized. The webmaster signed it off as property of the APA website. The site, though, provides several contact information on its page and very much accessible. The purpose given on this article is clearly to give emphasis on the CBT’s importance on combating against sleep disorders.

? Authority – the ALA organization published the online article and its credentials listed on their webpage are authentic. Although the author was not mentioned, the cited research and additional resources had enough qualifications to support the article’s premise. ? Objectivity – the objective of the article is to inform the readers of the best possible remedies for the sleeping disorder. The site does not have any form of advertising so it is safe to say that any article presented is far from biased.

The article does not also show any strong opinions from the author ? Currency and Coverage- all information is updated and only one dead link found. The website is free for all researchers to read in gathering information on the field of psychology. Although there were few images to help in balancing the content, the online website is not that much unattractive to surf at.
