Bosses come in all shapes and sizes, young and old, male and female, and even good and bad. They are in the position because of very unique circumstances individual to each person. Other bosses are hired into their position because of previous experience or an education degree. Bosses constantly have to make decisions for the good of the organization; some of those decisions are one’s the employees will not like. A good boss will take time to determine the best form of communication would be beneficial, anticipate how the employees will react, and prepare for the questions that will be presented. A bad boss will not think how the decision will affect the employees only him or herself, therefore the presentation of the decision will appear one sided. A bad boss does not take the responsibility of having a part of the decision-making and will blame other leadership members.

The method in which decisions are presented to employees is critical to gain the support and acceptance of all employees. Communication is an extremely important characteristic for a boss to possess as it can make or break an employee relationship. A good boss will communicate with the employees in a manner that can be understood including how it affects the employee, why the communication is needed, and allow questions to be asked. A bad boss is conscious of good communication skills but lacks the ability to follow through. Communication for a bad boss does not come easy and will come across as a negative point to the employees.

Not communicating will permit the employees to feel as if the boss is not concerned. All employees flourish when open honest communication is a normal condition with the boss. So much responsibility comes with having the position of a boss; one of the most important is holding the employees accountable to complete assigned duties. Most of the time employees do not see the big picture of how an organization is run and how each individual job duty helps to keep the work flow running smoothly. A good boss is one who remains professional when confronting an employee who is not completing the job duties.

A good boss will ask questions, offer help, and be supportive to accomplish the goal. On the other hand, a bad boss will act angry, accuse, and make the employee feel guilty and sometimes the boss will even complete the task just to have it completed. Giving an employee the opportunity to discuss the reasons, taking the responsibility and not feel guilty will create a less hostile work environment. When presented with an employee problem a good boss will first stop to think over the issue. Taking time to consider the options is a very useful tool that a good boss will ponder.

If the problem or issue is time sensitive, a good boss will call upon other supervisors, leadership, or his or her own boss to determine the best approach to take. Using their best judgment, a good boss will handle an employee problem with professionalism and communicate the significance of the issue allowing the employee to share his or her thoughts. By taking this approach it allows the boss and the employee to discuss the problem and determine the best suited action to be taken. A good boss will understand the type of personality the employee has and can determine the best approach to take.

By doing all these things, a good boss shows respect for the employee and the employee appreciates the leadership direction. Employees who feel they are valued members of the team will have the desire to do and achieve more because the feeling of importance to the organization. When an employee feels important, he or she will more likely contribute to more than just the required job duties such as join committee’s to help better the organization. These employees will also be more likely to share ideas that may be helpful without feeling their efforts are falling on deaf ears.

A not so good boss (bad boss), when presented with an employee problem will usually react in an emotional way which it entirely counteractive to solving the issue. When a boss reacts in this manner, the employee will automatically get defensive and solving the problem will take longer. Bad bosses can take the problem personally and therefore lash out at an employee to protect him or her. A bad boss will not or cannot communicate the repercussions that the problem has caused and this will make the employee feel inferior.

A bad boss can accuse and make an employee feel guilty for the problem or issue which in turn causes delay in solving the issue. Employees working for a bad boss are often unhappy with his or her jobs. They tend to call in sick, be late for work, and be the first person out the door at quitting time. If these employees do not receive respect from their supervisors they will not give respect to others in return. They will also talk badly about the supervisor and most likely the organization within the community, which can hurt the company immensely.

In today’s economy there are so many people out of work at varies levels of employment that everyone who is employed should be taking the best approach when dealing with problems in the workplace. Bosses can be a good example or a bad example to employees, and with so many out of work, the bad bosses need to reevaluate how they handle situations within the organization and their employees. A bad boss will have complaints filed that could lead to losing the job, but a good boss will mentor the employees to feel as of a valuable member of the team.
