In a school filled with different ethnicities, looks, and personalities, we should all be unique and original in our own ways.
We should be able to express our sparks of individuality by the little things such as the clothes we wear. In some schools in Canada, they limit the options for daily school wear. You would have to wear certain colours, logos, etc. But why wear that when we can dress how we want?As of 2011, the Toronto Catholic School Board enforced that every elementary school has to wear dress code which means the students have to wear the assigned colours: blue and white, with appropriate lengths and logos. If you do not follow the required code of conduct, there could be punishments such as a call home, in school suspensions, and removal of privileges, like sports teams, recesses, and clubs/committees.
Dress code is assigned for various different reasons like: that it’ll help you focus more on academics rather than your wardrobe. Another reason is that, it allegedly will reduce the amount of peer pressure and insecurities if we all wear similar clothing. But, the real question is assigned clothing really necessary? The answer is purely based on the person being asked. Each person has their own opinion, and people may or may not disagree with this statement. But, this is what I think could be better for the school. Before I explain my reasoning, we have to understand the other perspective and their own personal opinions. For example; some students, teachers, parents, etc.
may think it would be easier if you had uniform/dress code. You wouldn’t have to pick out a new outfit everyday, there would be no offensive words or images, and distractions on clothing. Personally, I understand those opinions as well, but at the same time I disagree because we should all be able to wear what we are comfortable in.
Some days if you feel like you want to dress more formal you could wear more expensive pants, or if you want to just be comfortable and just wear a sweatshirt. But, if you have dress code or uniform it limits you from wearing what you choose. Ever since I was little, my parents and teachers always tell us how every single person on this earth is different and special in their own ways. At school, of course we all have different personalities and physical appearance, but I feel we should be able to express ourselves just a bit more with the articles of clothing we wear.
Also, we have to be considerate to the kids who can’t afford to purchase the uniform or required coloured clothing. These were some of the many reasons why I personally think that dress code shouldn’t be the biggest issue in schools, and that we should rethink the decisions about assigned clothing in elementary schools.
