Armstrong October 14, 2011 Introduction The focus on this paper is to define multicultural psychology. Multicultural psychology refers to the study that if is influenced of multiple cultures and behaviors in a social context. Also multicultural psychology means multiple ways of knowing different cultures and backgrounds and investigates the influence of social factors on individuals.
Multicultural psychology is defined as a race, ethnicity, culture, and minority status that is represented in social class or different groups. The main point of multicultural psychology is the behaviors on individuals and it can occur in cultural context. Education can be a rationale for establishment of multicultural psychology. Psychologist as educators can encourage student by teaching him or her construct of multiculturalism in psychological education. One of the benefits of education is the diversity of different groups of individuals. Multicultural psychology is American psychology, albeit a part of American psychology that has been neglected” (Gordon, 2010 p. 2). Multicultural Psychology Cauce (2011) stated “Multicultural psychology places, a clear emphasis, perhaps it even privileges, the role of context and culture. There is not quest for universality and there is an assumption that the quest to understand and predict human behavior” (p. 228). Therefore, multicultural psychology should not only refer to study different group of people; it is discovered the different constructs and culturally specific.
One concept of multicultural psychology is related to theories and research, which includes a supported treatment in clinical psychology. However, some psychologists those are not culturally diverse. In some cases culture has been an issue as a neglected on theories and research. Unfortunately, neglect has been raise in the literature in multicultural psychology on many multicultural issues. As I mentioned before, multicultural psychology refers to the study of different cultures. Sometimes ethnicity groups are compared in some research to increase sample size.
For example African American, Asian, American Indian, and Latinos have something in common, which is their own experiences such as persons of color, race, and gender, and can have their own unique experiences. Another factor of multicultural psychology is the compare of two different groups of people. History of multicultural psychology The United States is a good example for the study of multicultural psychology because is a multicultural country where exist different groups of cultures. For example, those people that they emigrant to the United States, they are influenced by the traditions in the United States. African Americans have been in North America for centuries, individuals African Americans may vary to the extent that they are influenced by African and United Stated cultures” (Gordon, 2010 p. 8). Multicultural psychology is defined as a race, ethnicity, minority status, and culture. Race is a group of people from different countries and cultures; however, race cannot have a consensual definition. Perceptions of race are based on color, facial, features, hair texture, generalizations, and stereotypes can be as a result of race.
General speaking race is a definition of individuals’ characteristics. Ethnicity is a definition of similar concepts of race and culture. Ethnicity may involve and sharing cultural practices, which is the acceptance of group an individual’s culture. However, ethnicity can be a psychological characteristic that can be emphasis on individuals’ emotional expressions and restraint. Culture involves a systems and values on individuals who have been influenced by norms, and social which includes a psychological process such as language, educational, and media.
Culture is defined as a beliefs, values, attitudes, and roles, and interactions between individuals and society. Minority Status “ Navigating life in the United States for a person of color is not simply a matter of being influenced by or choosing more than one culture” (Gordon, 2010 p. 7). Minority statues involve a new experience for those individuals that they have to leave for a specific country. Discrimination can be a major issue on minority statues because individual’s actions can be toward in different culture of people. Unfortunately, racial, and ethnicity based on discrimination toward color of people.
Minority status involves physical on behavioral characteristics on different minority group of people, which includes a significantly less control or less power over individual’s lives. Minority status is an experience of groups of people related to success, educations, and so on. Multicultural psychology as a subspecialty of psychology Education and multicultural psychology involves sometimes politicians, fears by creating stereotypes on cultural differences. Many years ago African American and Latinos were rejecting to have an equal education as Caucasians groups. It has been found that individual, institutional, and societal benefits result from a culture-centered perspective” (American Psychologist, 2003 p. 228). These particular issue has been characterized in the way that the superiority of a particular groups and the inferiority of a different groups. Psychologist as educators have been focusing on education and new training programs that help minority groups. Psychologists as educators are becoming more knowledge about multicultural groups, which includes of learning of different roles, behaviors, attitudes, language, and cultural perspectives.
In some institutes students focus and conduct research by addressing issues such as gender, color, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. Education and multicultural may help students by avoiding stereotyping and social prejudice that against minority groups. Conclusion In summary, multicultural psychology refers to the study that if is influenced of multiple cultures and behaviors in a social context.
