PERSONAL STATEMENT Chemical Engineering is oneof the most interesting field in Science and Engineering. Ever since my olderbrother introduced me to the subject, and I researched on it, I have foundnumerous reasons why I would particularly enjoy this course. Given its diverse and everchanging nature, and the opportunity to contribute to quality of life aroundthe world, this aspect of engineering offers a very unique appeal.
Having the opportunity to study chemical reactions design on alarge scale is one of the things that I find appealing in Chemical Engineering.Chemical Engineering appeals to me because ofthe challenges involved in the application of scientific theory to practical. Iparticularly look forward to studying in the field of Energy and PetroleumEngineering. In today’s world, Chemical Engineering has an increasinglyimportant role across a wide range of industries from petrochemicals to pharmaceuticals.
The opportunity to contribute to society through technological innovation andthe broad range of career path, is for me, one of the main attractions ofchemical engineering. Chemistry is a fundamental of life, without itthe world around us would cease to function. The ability to make “things” on alarge scale whilst optimizing resources , be it Plastics, consumer products, gasoline, food, paper, medicine, soap, fertilizer, among many others issomething I find very fascinating in the Chemical Engineering world.I amcurrently taking my A-levels studying: Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, all ofwhich are challenging subjects that test the depth of knowledge andunderstanding of the individual taking them.
These subjects have developed meto be somewhat meticulous with my work, whilst also developing a new insightinto solving problems; allowing me to ‘think outside of the box’. One key thingthat I have learnt is that there can be multiple solutions to any singleproblem which is something that every Chemical Engineer should keep in mind. Chemistryhas definitely improved my knowledge of reactions and how certain mechanismsoperate, it has given me a novice understanding of Chemical Engineering which Iam yearning to extend. I amapplying to take part in the 2 weeks program in Chevron Nigeria Limited for theHigh School Graduates internship scheme during which I hope to gain practicalexperience, as well as greater maturity enabling me to go into my degree coursewith improved skills and broader experience. I will also apply for summerinternships and Engineering Placement Scheme if circumstances permit during mycourse of study. This is because I would like to improve my knowledge on howengineering theory is applied in industry and this will result in me being ableto understand how the concepts taught in the course are applied in real lifesituations.
Iparticipate in several activities centred in and out of college, such asreading buddy, where I help the younger year members of the school with theirreading difficulties and guide them through their daily reading andcomprehension skills, I also play sports like Football, Table-Tennis andBasketball. I am really interested in studying Chemical Engineering because Iam keen to further my knowledge and understanding of the chemical processesthat go into manufacturing the necessities that we use in our everyday lives. For example the conversion of Crude Oil into different End Products using HeatExchangers and Distillation Columns, I find this amazing and I do want to havea better understanding of how it is processed and of how it works. It is reallyfascinating to know that Chemical Engineers are in charge of designing andcontrolling processes in the industry in general, not only in the petrochemicalarea as many think.
I find things like this absolutely incredible and I chooseto encounter and learn about much more incredible things by studying such acourse.I lookforward to hearing back from you regarding my application.
