When a person gets older there will always be that bittersweet memory of the studying years. Even though I am still not sure of what my future occupation will be, I did not want to miss the university experience in my life. This is the reason why, at the age of 19, after graduating from high school in Italy, I have applied for the University of Rome “La Sapience”. Suddenly, after the first term I have decided to quit my studies and move to England.
However, I am aware that a higher education degree is necessary to build a career in the future. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. – Nelson Mandela (FM, 2014). This is where the University of Greenwich steps in. I have found the course’s description quite interesting and the area lovely, so I told myself “Why not? ” At first I had many concerns.
Studying, being able to concentrate and do a good Job is already hard as it is, not being able to fully understand nor express yourself in an adequate manner at all times makes it even harder. Also, it was important to me to find a university concerned about the future as well, able to assist and guide dents towards the working world.
I remember reading a book from Ron Hunter “Toy Box Leadership: Leadership Lessons from the Toys You Loved as a Child” (Ron ; Waddled, 2008). The author analyses how Apple Inc. Revolutionized the market, creating the Mackintosh, then he quoted Ralph Wald Emerson who said: “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. ” (Emerson, 1994). This phrase had a heavy impact on me and it has been really helpful in my decision-making process. So I took the challenge and filled in the application forms.
It is now six weeks that I have been a student and all the concerns are slowly becoming smaller. Tutorial classes are held and links are available with explanations and tips on how to write a good essay, which I have found really helpful, and group work is encouraged as well. The university assists students for future employability by installing a “Personal and Professional Development” course and introduced the “Employability Passport” scheme which is brilliant. It makes your C.V. look better for future employers and keeps students focused on the final goal: build a career.
Another helpful task that the University of Greenwich takes is to encourage and help student to get internships. Everything is employability-focused, something that I really appreciate and hope to possess after my graduation.
