This propaganda piece of Ralph Nader is effective because it makes it seem like he is an important figure in politics. Showing this through the use of positive words being attributed to him and displaying what he stands for to allude the readers that he is the hero or savior for the populace. This poster was created during his election when he was running for president of the green party, it was put together by one of the supporters of the green party to show support, and show awareness of what Ralph Nader stands for. The poster makes the reader assume he cares about the American people and that he stands against popular opinion. This shows that he isn’t like other politicians that put on a facade and say things in order to please the audience, his motives are apparent and you get what you see. The design and layout of the poster were well done, gave it a sense of an artistic look to it. It uses many tones of the same colour to add lighting and shade to the individual, making it a nice art piece. The creator used white on a coloured background and size to make certain words stand out more than others, thereby bringing your attention to these words.
The words they put emphasis on using size and colour are “integrity” and “people first.” This shows the reader that the candidate is an honest, caring, selfless individual. Basically what every citizen looking for in a president.Furthermore, the propaganda poster is trying to persuade the reader that Ralph Nader would be the best candidate for president. The poster tries to impress and wow the reader by stating how good of a debater he is and all the great things he fights for. Making the reader develop a positive impression and therefore increasing the number of votes for his election. In addition, like many other propagandists, this poster uses a variety of techniques in order to communicate a message, influence others and make this poster more appealing to the public.
One example used is glittering generalities, where they add a bunch of positive reinforcement words such as exceptional American, the voice of dissent, people first and integrity to influence the reader that the candidate running for president has all these qualities. Another technique used in this poster is a device known as testimony, where they associate a product or idea with a politician or celebrity. In this poster, they have associated the idea that he speaks for the people and that he is an exceptional American, which makes him cut him for the job. Another more subtle but still evident technique used in this poster is the use of fear mongering. In fine print words at the bottom of the poster, the propagandist states that Ralph is such a good debater that even some politicians are scared of arguing against him.
Overall, this propaganda piece does a pretty good job of trying to persuade the public and get across the message that Ralph Nader would be the appropriate candidate for president.
