To: MichaelSaadFrom:Jansen Chu-shing LeungSubject:Analysis and discussion of three civil engineering job postings Date:January 17, 2018 IntroductionThe aim of this memo is to outline and investigate three civilengineering jobs which I am currently eligible to apply for.
Detailedexplanations on the company background, job requirements and jobresponsibilities will be further evaluated and discussed. To add on, the most applicablejob that suits me the most will be determined at the end with specifiedreasons. SummaryThree internship job postings were evaluated throughout this memo, whichwere the POWER Engineers intern and Acciona engineering internship fromUSA, as well as the internship programme offered by CLP from Hong Kong. The choice of these three opportunities was based on my current skills andqualifications. At the end, the civil engineering intern at Acciona wasconsidered as the best choice. Job Posting1: Civil/Structural Engineering Intern at POWER Engineers Company BackgroundPOWER Engineers is an American private engineering firm which aims todevelop unique and innovative ideas to their loyal customers, in order tosatisfy their needs and demands, as well as to gain reputation in theengineering industry. They mainly focus on sustainability in their designs andprojects, which is a key factor to succeed nowadays, since the concept ofenergy saving and efficiency is prevailing at this moment.
In my point of view, sustainability is an indispensable component in the society nowadays due to theexaggerating increase in demand of energy consumption. Companies should start developingand promoting innovative measures base on this idea to achieve their goals. Therefore,I would be grateful if I have a chance to work at a company that shares thesame idea and concept with me. Internship OpportunityThis year, POWER Engineers is offering a summer civil/structuralengineering internship programme for full time university undergraduatestudents who currently enroll in civil/structural engineering programme with aminimum of 2.75 in GPA. The main topic of this programme is overheadtransmission line, which is an essential component for the daily lives of humanbeings, since it involves the transmission of electric energy for human use. Job ResponsibilitiesCandidates will have the chance to design and analyze various overheadtransmission line structures, to determine different type of loads by usingtheir knowledge learnt from schools. They will be lead by an experienced andskilled professional engineer throughout this job period.
As a second-yearcivil engineering student, I have taken a handful of engineering fundamentalcourses such as statics, dynamics and structural analysis throughout these twoacademic years. Consequently, I am feeling confident to deal with such kind ofcomplicated practical problems regarding to this field, which will beencountered a lot during the internship period. Job RequirementsRegarding the job requirements, this program requires candidates to knowthe basic knowledge of structural analysis and material science, which studentsshould be now learning at their universities. Other than practical knowledge, studentswho can demonstrate excellent multitasking, organization, time handling skillswill have a greater advantage while completing tasks given by their employer. Thisjob requirement certainly fits one of my greatest strengths: time managementand punctuality. When I was given a job to complete, I usually follow adetailed time schedule organized by myself. I always complete my work inadvance of the deadline to spare more time on proofreading and improving.
Forthis reason, there is no doubt that I am a suitable candidate for thisinternship programme, since the fact is, every employer is seeking a worker whocan make good use of time on their duties. However, the major obstacle that mayaffect my job application process is my current knowledge in engineeringsoftware (AutoCad and Solidworks), which is one of the essential criteria inthe job requirement. I am not familiar with using these kinds of software sinceI was given limited chance to practice throughout these two years at UBC. Job Posting2: Civil Engineering Intern at Acciona Energy USA Global LLC History and Mission of CompanyAcciona is a renowned top-leading international business corporation headquarteredin Madrid, Spain.

After100 years of development and expansion, the company was renamed as “Acciona”and it was expanded to all corners of the globe. Acciona is responsible for amultitude of major infrastructures in the world, such as Torre Europa in Madridand Ting Kau Bridge in Hong Kong. They have a strong will to make influence onthe present and future world, by improving the living standards of people in asustainable aspect and manner. The mission of Acciona exactly matches my careergoal: to make the world abetter place with high living quality, as well as to contribute to the futuregenerations in order to maintain sustainability.
Hence, oneof my tremendous dream is to work at a large international company, where I canenjoy not only a decent salary, but also satisfaction and reputation. In other words, candidates will be working in groups to handle a huge variety of job duties, including design blueprints of a structure, estimate cost of design andmaintenance, handle and report data, etc. These particular job duties areexactly what I have learnt in an engineering design course last year, whichinvolves the knowledge in project lifecycle, risk analysis and cost estimation.Apparently, I should be able to solve these kinds of problems with nodifficulty at all.
Furthermore, selected candidates may also have a chance tointeract with customers and other professionals such as architects andsurveyors. Job QualificationsA strong team player who has excellent communication and leadershipskills is preferred, since this job requires not only individual contribution, but also the combination of team effort, team moral and team spirit. Most the specificationslisted above can be fulfilled by my application except for the operations ofengineering software, which I mentioned before, is one of my weaknesses in myinternship application. *Attachedplease find the three job postings in detail. ConclusionThe three companies all provide me a precious opportunity to familiarize myself with the working environmentand responsibilities of a typical civil engineer, to gain experience in arelated field in order to improve my problem-solving, communication andleadership skills, which is beneficial for my future career aspect.
