While the line between ethics andlaw may be blurred, there are significant differences when we look at the twoterms side by side. The Separation Thesis is an important negative implicationof the Social Thesis, maintaining that there is a conceptual separation betweenlaw and morality.1 Lawis defined as a legal system that compromises of rules and principles set bythe ruling authority to govern over the affairs of the community, while ethics aredefined as moral guidelines set, put forth, and followed by an individual. 2Ethics are a moral philosophy where a person makes a specific moral choice. Incontrast, law is a system that comprises of rules and principles to govern asociety.

3Ethics is a choice, whereas law is enforced and needs to be obeyed. Ethicscannot be enforced and may or may not be consistent. 4  It is a decision made by an individual, whilethe law is enforced on the people. Law is judged by judicial standards whileethical behavior is judged by one’s moral standards.
